WHENYOUNG – SINGLE REVIEW

Whenyoung – The Collector (YALA! Records)
Whenyoung - The Collector

Release Date: Out Now

I went to Limerick once. For a wedding. Great wedding but didn’t see much of Limerick and what I did see certainly didn’t look anything like local trio Whenyoung. The new single from the three piece, ‘The Collector’, opens with a haunting little guitar line that sounds like it’s been left behind by the XX but by the time vocalist Aoife Power the tune is transformed in to something with a much warmer heart. The guitars chop and bounce like all good indie-pop should but there is a sad tone behind the scenes here which gives this an unsettled vibe and a sense of missing out that comes from bands that want more than they have. For me, this is pitched somewhere between Young Knives, the Subways and JJ72 but there are myriad influences at play here creating an utterly charming song.
