JACOB RIDDALL – SINGLE REVIEW

Jacob Riddall – Walking By
Jacob Riddall - Walking By

Release Date: 11th January 2017

Despite a few opening bars that sound like Jacob Riddall is simply tuning up, this latest single from the Westcountry singer-songwriter develops, nay, evolves in to something quite, quite special. ‘Walking By’ is sparse in every sense with guitar notes echoing in the middle distance like icy droplets falling in to a still, misty canal from a damp bridge as a reluctant murderer walks nervously from the scene of his crime. However, such sparseness does not detract in any way from the beauty and sprawling ambition of this tune that emerges from a crackled microphone to stand resplendent in twinkling piano notes and the kind of atmospherics that have played so well for the XX, early Ed Sheeran, the Maccabees and John Martyn. Underlying all of the open minded adventurousness, however, is some good solid song writing which belies Riddall’s folk background. ‘Walking By’ is where folk and indie collide to create a thoroughly modern and compelling sound, just right for the beginnings of a new year and, dare I say it, a brave new era.

Live Dates:
