ANDY RUDDY - SINGLE REVIEW

Andy Ruddy - On This Great Day
Andy Ruddy - On This Great Day EP

Release Date: 29th September 2014

Bradford lad Andy Ruddy once came to London with a guitar strapped to his back and a set of songs in his heart ready to find his dream. Sensibly, as a backup, he also had a law degree but on the basis of this EP he may never need that degree - unless he wants to buy a house or get a divorce without paying the crippling legal fees. The four track collection opens up with title track 'On This Great Day' which is a sweeping, swooning song of beauty that requires people to dance in corn fields in linen clothes and be utterly, unquestionably happy and in love. Somewhere between Damien Rice and Elbow is where Ruddy exists with a flat northern twang and a sense of reluctant euphoria. 'Resolutions' is up next with a more Jack Johnson vibe about the guitar playing but still that climactic positivity building throughout.

On 'If The Years Are Kind' Ruddy switches to piano and the vocals drop to a midnight whisper for an intimate, confessional sort of a song that requires candles and heavy hearts to be fully effective. The EP finishes up with 'Boy', a tune that blends acoustic guitar, piano and soft, Jake Morley-esque vocals to create a real late summer's afternoon tune to watch the sun move further away to. Andy Ruddy has a real sense of integrity and subtle passion to his songs which it is hard not to fall in love with and impossible to ignore. Blissful.
